COVID-19 update

Here at nib New Zealand, we’re committed to supporting our members and advisers through both good and challenging times. That’s why, back in April, we introduced an extensive member support package in response to COVID-19, and in June extended many elements of that package through to the end of September, in recognition of the pandemic’s financial and health impact on Kiwis.

Member support extended until 31 December 2020

Given the ongoing COVID-19 challenges, we’re pleased to announce we’ve extended the following elements of our support package until 31 December 2020:

The ability for eligible existing members who are experiencing financial hardship to suspend* their health insurance policy and premium payment for up to six months.
Cover for GP or specialist consultations that need to be conducted via video or tele-consultation due to COVID-19*.
Ability for existing members to increase their excess (payable upon hospital admission) to the maximum allowable level under their policy without needing to be re-underwritten if they choose to reduce their excess as their financial situation improves^.

We do have other financial hardship options available, so if your clients do require additional support, we may be able to help on a case-by-case basis.

Members who are experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to contact us to discuss their specific circumstances. We’re here to help on 0800 123 642.

We continue to have options available for employers, so to discuss in more detail, please get in touch with your Group Health Account Manager or contact the Group Sales Team at grouphealth@nib.co.nz.

Here’s a reminder of how we’ve supported our members so far

Provided more than 2,000 Kiwis members with access to financial hardship support, including premium relief and suspension options.
Postponed premium increases to July for over 50,000 members who had a policy renewal in the April to June quarter.
Extended coverage for COVID-19 related treatment across all levels of hospital cover, at no extra cost.
Expanded cover for consultations with GPs and specialists through telehealth, ensuring members could continue to see their medical practitioner during severe lockdown restrictions.
Extended treatment pre-approval from three to six months, meaning over 1,000 members did not have to reapply for surgery approval if they experienced delays in accessing hospital treatment.

nib has also made a $1 million donation from nib foundation and nib to support charitable initiatives, including Lifeline Aotearoa and Clearhead, to assist the community across New Zealand and Australia during the pandemic.

*nib support package will be available for existing nib members (as at 31 March 2020) until 31 December 2020. Policy terms and conditions still apply. Members must have GP or specialist cover under their policy to apply for the relevant tele or video conference benefits. ^Members must apply for the excess reduction by 30 June 2021.
